When you stay trapped in the past.
5SOS is the acronym of "5 Seconds Of Summer"
I drove by all the places we used to hang out getting wasted
I thought about our last kiss, how it felt the way you tasted
And even though your friends tell me you're doing fine
Are you somewhere feeling lonely even though he's right beside you?
When he says those words that hurt you, do you read the ones I wrote you?
Sometimes I start to wonder, was it just a lie?
If what we had was real, how could you be fine?
'Cause I'm not fine at all
I remember the day you told me you were leaving
I remember the make-up running down your face
And the dreams you left behind you didn't need them
Like every single wish we ever made
I wish that I could wake up with amnesia
And forget about the stupid little things
Like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you
And the memories I never can escape
'Cause I'm not fine at all
The pictures that you sent me they're still living in my phone
I'll admit I like to see them, I'll admit I feel alone
And all my friends keep asking why I'm not around
It hurts to know you're happy, yeah, it hurts that you've moved on
It's hard to hear your name when I haven't seen you in so long
It's like we never happened, was it just a lie?
If what we had was real, how could you be fine?
'Cause I'm not fine at all
I remember the day you told me you were leaving
I remember the make-up running down your face
And the dreams you left behind you didn't need them
Like every single wish we ever made
I wish that I could wake up with amnesia
And forget about the stupid little things
Like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you
And the memories I never can escape
If today I woke up with you right beside me
Like all of this was just some twisted dream
I'd hold you closer than I ever did before
And you'd never slip away
And you'd never hear me say
I remember the day you told me you were leaving
I remember the make-up running down your face
And the dreams you left behind you didn't need them
Like every single wish we ever made
I wish that I could wake up with amnesia
And forget about the stupid little things
Like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you
And the memories I never can escape
'Cause I'm not fine at all
No, I'm really not fine at all
Tell me this is just a dream
'Cause I'm really not fine at all.
DROVE BY= Go (went) past in a vehicle.
USED TO= Used to express habitual or accustomed actions, states,... taking place in the past but not continuing into the present.
HANG OUT= Spend time idly, in a certain location or with certain people. To socialize with your friends, whether it is of your choosing or not; most of the time the term is used to refer to a type of fun.
GETTING WASTED= Achieved nothing, serving no useful purpose, just wasting time. Another different point could be that teenagers usually like to get drunk on parties even though they’re not allowed to so they do it in houses or places where they won’t get caught. He’s feeling sad and is driving around the places he and his girl used to drink.
THE WAY YOU TASTED= Her distinct flavour.
EVEN THOUGH= Although, despite the fact that.
SOMEWHERE= Unknown place or indefinite location.
FEELING LONELY= Lonesome. We have to distinguish two different states of mind. Being alone is a positive one, where a person is content with being only with themselves. Being lonely is a negative state of mind where a person feels sad and upset at being left alone. Being alone is the state in which a person can be to calm themselves, recover and overall just be able to figure themselves out. Being lonely is a state that arises from a certain situation in a person’s life that leaves them discontent or heartbroken. In this case, because the girl moved on to another guy.
HURT= To cause emotional suffering. He’s asking her that when her new guy says the nasty words that hurt her, would she read the sweet and honest words this guy (the one she left) wrote her.
WONDER= /'wʌndə/ To be curious to know. The verb 'wonde'r is usually used to say that someone thinks about something and tries to guess or understand more about it. If she really loved him, how come she is okay? How come she is in a new relationship and not feeling hurt and heartbroken as he is? While she’s fine with her new guy, her ex was left broken and depressed.
'CAUSE= (informal) Because.
I'M NOT FINE AT ALL= I'm not fine in any way, in the slightest.
SINGLE WISH= Only one wish, one desire. When she left, she left behind not only him, but her dreams and plans, and the promises both of them had.
WAKE UP= To awake from sleep.
AMNESIA= /æm'ni:ʒə/. Loss of memory. (Medicine) a defect in memory, especially one resulting from pathological cause, such as brain damage or hysteria. In the song, the only way he can relief his pain is if he woke up with amnesia. When you wake up with amnesia you forget about everything; he would like to forget everything that has to do with her like the little things.
FALL ASLEEP= Change from awaking to a sleeping state.
ESCAPE= (Figuratively) To get away or break free from.
KEEP ASKING= To continue doing something, in this case, asking him.
MOVED ON= To move forward, also in the metaphorical sense. The fact that he loved her so much and he thought that she felt the same way, makes it really hard for him to know that she’s happy without him. She was his world, she was everything for him. And yet, she managed to be happy with some other guy that’s not him, and that hurts him just as much as she leaving him.
He thinks that there’s no greater pain than to see the person you love, love somebody else (which is what’s exactly happening to him right now).
IN SO LONG= In a long time. The guy hasn’t seen the girl since she left which was probably a long time ago, so it hurts when he hears her name.
RIGHT BESIDES ME= Exactly close to me, near me.
TWISTED DREAM= A nightmare, a bad dream. He wishes this was just some terrible nightmare and that he could wake up with their relationship still being intact.
HOLD YOU= To hold somebody, to embrace or hug somebody.
CLOSER= Physically nearer.
SLIP AWAY= Leave discreetly; also slowly dissapear.
It tells the story of a boy who is powerless in his attempts to recover from the end of a relationship.
The video makes it seem that remembering the good times is making it even tougher to live in the present. The song’s protagonist wishes he could forget those happy memories and get on with his life.
