4:13 |
How can you see into my eyes
like open doors.
Leading you down into my core
where I've become so numb.
Without a soul
my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home.
Wake me up.
Wake me up inside.
I can't wake up.
Wake me up inside.
Save me.
Call my name and save me from the dark.
Wake me up.
Bid my blood to run.
I can't wake up.
Before I come undone.
Save me.
Save me from the nothing I've become.
Now that I know what I'm without
you can't just leave me.
Breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life.
Wake me up.
Wake me up inside.
I can't wake up.
Wake me up inside.
Save me.
Call my name and save me from the dark.
Wake me up.
Bid my blood to run.
I can't wake up.
Before I come undone.
Save me.
Save me from the nothing I've become.
Bring me to life.
I've been living a lie
there's nothing inside.
Bring me to life.
Frozen inside without your touch,
without your love, darling.
Only you are the life among the dead
All of this time
I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark
but you were there to follow me
I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems.
Got to open my eyes to everything.
Without a thought
without a voice
without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be sacrifice.
SEE INTO MY EYES= Know what is inside my soul, see my real feelings.
LIKE OPEN DOORS= The complete sentence is “How can you see into my eyes like open doors?”. My eyes are for you like open doors (LIKE is the comparative preposition). Through my eyes you can see my soul, the same as through an open door you can see what is inside a house, which is usually secret for outsiders.
LEADING= Guiding.
DOWN INTO MY CORE= Into the deepest and most important part of me, my heart, my soul, that secret intimate part of me which is my real self.
NUMB= /nʌm/ Sometimes when you have been sitting in an uncomfortable position, you get up and, oops, you can’t walk because your leg is numb: there is no feeling and you can’t control it. And then you start getting a prickling feeling when the blood runs back through it before it all comes back to normal. But when you feel numb (or your heart is numb), you can’t feel anything, you feel like you are half asleep, like a zombie.
SOUL= Spirit, the immaterial and eternal part of a person. If you feel you are without a soul, you feel numb, without feelings, without energy to do things, like nothing matters and it’s all the same.
CALL MY NAME= Pronounce my name loud and clear.
BID MY BLOOD TO RUN= The verb TO BID means to command, to order, to demand. This verb, like many others, use the construction: verb + object + infinitive with to.
- I want you to go = I desire to see you go away
- She needs me to help = She needs my help
- Bid my blood to run = Please, order my blood to start flowing through my body again, so I can feel alive again, because now I feel like I am dead and my heart has stopped.
COME UNDONE= Feel totally depressed and devastated, to collapse emotionally.
I KNOW WHAT I’M WITHOUT= I know the things that I don’t have.
BREATHE INTO ME= In the Bible, when God created man He made a human figure with clay and breathed into him (breathe= push air out of your body through your mouth). God’s breath was the breath of life, the soul, so when He breathed into the mud figure, the figure became alive (material + spirit = human being). So this is the metaphor that they are using in this song. She said she feels numb, like dead, empty inside. If he breathes into her, she will get a soul again and be alive, a human person. She was just a figure of clay and she wants a spirit to become a person, that’s why she says: “breathe into me and make me real, bring me to life”.
THE DEAD= People who are dead, people who are not alive because they have died.
I’VE BEEN SLEEPING A THOUSAND YEARS IT SEEMS= I seems like I have been sleeping for a thousand years. This is the way I feel, like a Sleeping Beauty who waited for the kiss of her prince not one hundred years, but one thousand to wake up!
GOT TO OPEN MY EYES TO EVERYTHING= The phrase GOT TO means “I’ve got to, I must”. To “open your eyes” means to see and understand, to become conscious, to learn.
Amy Lee once stated in an interview while on tour that this song was inspired when she met a friend of a friend: a total stranger who did not know her, yet could somehow "See inside her." When he spoke, his words "Woke her up inside." This encounter with a true "Word of Knowledge" inspired the hit that would launch her career.
Evanescence is often labelled as a "Christian band", so it's not strange to find a spiritual message all through this song, turning a simple love/friendship feeling into an elaborated existencialist vision of modern man and his inner void.
