Originally recorded for her debut studio album "Badlands" in 2015, it was re-recorded for the sondtrack to the 2016 film "The Huntsman: The Winer's war". Released on April 9, 2016. The song is used in the teaser trailer to promote the film.
Sick of all these people talking
Sick of all this noise
Tired of all these cameras flashing
Sick of being poised
Now my neck is open wide
Begging for a fist around it
Already choking on my pride
So there's no use crying about it
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Who is the fairest of them all?
I'm headed straight for the castle
They wanna make me their queen
And there's an old man sitting on the throne
That is saying
That I probably shouldn't be so mean
I'm headed straight for the castle
They've got the kingdom locked up
And there's an old man sitting on the throne
That is saying
I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut
Straight for the castle
Oh, all of these minutes passing
Sick of feeling used
If you wanna break these walls down
You're gonna get bruised
Now my neck is open wide
Begging for a fist around it
Already choking on my pride
So there's no use crying about it
There's no use crying about it
There's no use crying about it
There's no use crying about it
There's no use crying about it
I'm headed straight for the castle
They wanna make me their queen
And there's an old man sitting on the throne
That is saying
That I probably shouldn't be so mean
I'm headed straight for the castle
They've got the kingdom locked up
And there's an old man sitting on the throne
That is saying
I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut
Straight for the castle
They've got the kingdom locked up
And there's an old man sitting on the throne
That is saying
I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut
Straight for the castle
SICK OF= Tired of...
POISED= Composed, dignified; exhibiting composure; being in balance or equilibrium.
OPEN WIDE= (emphatic) Totally open.
BEGGING FOR= Asking for (in a desperate way)
CHOKING ON MY PRIDE= (derogative) full of arrogance. -- If you are eating and drinking and you choke, you probably did it too fast and the food or liquid interferes with your breathing pipe, so you start coughing and feel like you are suffocating. The expression "to choke in your pride" means that you are so terribly proud.
THERE'S NO USE + -ing= It is useless to... "There no use crying" = If you cry, nothing will change, it's useless to cry.
MIRROR, MIRROR...= These words are the famous words that Snow White's step-mother, the evil queen, used to say every day looking at her reflection on the mirror. The mirror always said it was her. When Snow White grew up into a beautiful girl, the mirror, for the first time, said she was not the most beautiful one anymore, but Snow White. The evil queen then decided to kill her. -- This question is an archaism, in modern English we would say "Who is the most beautiful one of all?"
I'M HEADED... FOR (a place)= I'm going to (a place).
WANNA= (coll.) Want to.
MEAN= Bad, evil, despicable.
GONNA= (coll.) Going to.
BRUISED= If you received a blow (because they hit you, beat you or you fall down) you may be bruised. If you have a bruise in your body it hurts and the skin turns a bit red, later blue and maybe later kind of black.
This song was not originally written for the movie The Huntsman, so there is no connection between the lyrics and Snow White's story or anything, at least not in the original intention.
Halsey is the kind of girl who, let's put it nicely, doesn't care about anything too much. I can't transcribe here the exact words she used to explain the meaning of this song because I would have to hide too many words to make it acceptable for a family audience, so I'll just give a summary of her ideas.
Basically, this song is about: I don't care what people think about me and...
"If I'm not offending anyone's race or creed or beliefs to a level of political incorrectness, then why do I have to **** please anyone? I have no one to please. I think that is kind of what that song signifies, my entry into the music industry and the realization that I don't have to follow anyone's rules."
Well, I managed to say it all and even quote part of her speech with only one "****", cool.
Also, according to her own words: "I think the old man is kind of just representative of a patriarch".
Well, if she wrote the song, it is a bit worrying that she is not even sure of what she was trying to say, but anyway, being a feminist as she is, we "kind of just" understand that "a patriarch" is the prototype of a male chauvinist she is just rebelling against. She must probably think that labelling him as “old” is a kind of insult or something.
So, sorry, no castles, no kings or queens, no mirrors and no magic; just sheer provocation. Quite fashionable nowadays. The song is catchy though, sounds cool.
