Transcript

When you're close to tears remember
Someday it'll all be over
One day we're gonna get so high

Though it's darker than December
What's ahead is a different colour
One day we're gonna get so high

And at the end of the day remember the days
When we were close to the end
And we wondered how we made it through the night

The end of the day remember the way
We stayed so close till the end
We'll remember it was me and you

'Cause we are gonna be
Forever you and me

You will always keep me flying high
In the sky of love

Don't you think it's time you started
Doing what we always wanted
One day we're gonna get so high

'Cause even the impossible
Is easy when we got each other
One day we're gonna get so high

And at the end of the day remember the days
When we were close to the end
And we wondered how we made it through the night

The end of the day remember the way
We stayed so close till the end
We'll remember it was me and you

'Cause we are gonna be
Forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high
In the sky of love

High, high, high, high

And at the end of the day remember the days
When we were close to the end
And we wondered how we made it through the night

The end of the day remember the way
We stayed so close till the end
We'll remember it was me and you

'Cause we are gonna be
    (Forever, high forever)
Forever you and me
    (Forever, you and me forever)
You will always keep me flying high
    (Forever, high forever)
In the sky of love
    (Forever, you and me forever)

Explanations

YOU’RE CLOSE TO TEARS= You are about to cry. You are almost crying. If you are close to something you are almost doing it (but maybe you will or maybe you won’t).

SOMEDAY= also SOME DAY. An indefinite time in the future.

IT'LL= /ɪtəl/

ONE DAY= Some day.

WE’RE GONNA GET SO HIGH= We’re going to get extremely happy. To be high, or to get high, is to become euphoric, very very happy. It is also very often used to describe the effects of drugs or alcohol (if you’re high, you’re intoxicated), but we can use it for any kind of intense happiness.
We can also say “to be in high spirits” or “to be in low spirits” to say we’re very happy or a bit depressed.

WHAT’S AHEAD IS A DIFFERENT COLOUR= The future (what’s ahead) will be different (so it will be more happy).

COLOUR= (AmE "color") /kʌlə*/

WE WERE CLOSE= The word CLOSE is often used as an adverb meaning “near”, in which case it uses the preposition TO (stay close to me). If we say that two people are close we often mean that they have an intimate relationship. Your close friends are your best friends. You can also say “we are close” to mean that you have a great friendship with another person.

WE MADE IT THROUGH= We could survive a difficult situation. In the song he is more emphatic and he adds “the night” (we made it through the night).  The night is a dark period of time, it symbolizes sadness and difficult times.

WE’LL REMEMBER IT WAS ME AND YOU= When everything is over and we’re happy again we will remember that we were together in the bad times.

WE ARE GONNA BE FOREVER YOU AND ME= We will always be together.

YOU WILL ALWAYS KEEP ME FLYING HIGH= You will always make me so happy. The verb KEEP (continue, maintain) is followed by –ING.

DOING WHAT WE ALWAYS WANTED= He pronounces WANTED as "wanned", without T. After an N, the T may get lost . In Britain this happens rarely, in colloquial English; in America this happens often or always, depending on the area.

'CAUSE= Cause. Also spelled COZ (BrE), CUZ (AmE).

'CAUSE EVEN THE IMPOSSIBLE= Notice how THE is pronounced /ðɪ/ (instead of /ðə/) when it goes before a vowel. You can also hear it when he says "the end".

WHEN WE GOT EACH OTHER= When we have each other, when we are together.

Meaning

This song is about a man assuring his partner (girlfriend/wife) that nothing bad lasts forever and things will get better in the future. Now it’s darker than December, but some day it’ll all be over.

He’s also telling her that she’s not alone in this because he’s going to support her in everything (remember the way we stayed so close till the end). But now her pain is his pain and he feels the whole process is affecting him too, so when things finally get better for her, they will get better for him too (one day we’re gonna get so high).
