"Insatiable" is the debut solo single released by Australian singer Darren Hayes, former lead singer of the band Savage Garden.
When moonlight crawls along the street
Chasing away the summer heat,
Footsteps outside. Somewhere below
The world revolves, I've let it go.
We build our church above the street
We practise love between these sheets
The candy sweetness, scent of you
It bathes my skin, I'm stained in you
And all I have to do is hold you
There's a racing within my heart
And I am barely touchin' you
Turn the lights down low
Take it off
Let me show my love for you: Insatiable
Turn me on. Never stop
Wanna taste every drop
My love for you: Insatiable
The moonlight plays upon your skin,
A kiss that lingers takes me in.
I fall asleep inside of you.
There are no words,
There's only truth.
Breathe in, breathe out,
There is no sound.
We move together up and down.
We levitate, our bodies soar,
Our feet don't even touch the floor.
But nobody knows you like I do,
'Cause the world they don't understand
That I grow stronger in your hands.
Turn the lights down low.
Take it off.
Let me show my love for you: Insatiable.
Turn me on, never stop.
Wanna taste every drop.
My love for you is insatiable.
Baby
Oh yeah
We never sleep, we're always holdin' hands,
Kissin' for hours, talkin' and makin' plans.
I feel like a better man
Just being in the same room.
We never sleep, there's just so much to do,
So much to say.
Can't close my eyes when I'm with you.
Insatiable the way I'm loving you.
Turn the lights down low.
Take it off.
Let me show my love for you: Insatiable.
Turn me on. Never stop.
Wanna taste every drop.
My love for you is insatiable.
Turn the lights down low.
Take it off.
Let me show
My love for you,
Insatiable.
Turn me on.
Never stop.
Wanna taste every drop.
My love for you is insatiable.
Oh baby. Oh baby.
Oh
When I look in your eyes
Insatiable the way I'm loving you
Oh, what can I do?
Insatiable, insatiable for you
Insatiable for you
MOONLIGHT= The light from the moon (also: sunlight, starlight)
CRAWLS= /krɔ:lz/ To move slowly on the hands and knees or by dragging the body along the ground (like insects, etc).
In this case it’s a metaphor of the way the moonlight moves along the street: slowly, silently, mysteriously.
CHASING AWAY= To chase is to run after something in order to catch it (lions chase gazelles). But if you chase something away, you do the opposite, you send it away, you escape from it. In this case, the arrival of the night (the moonlight) is making the temperature cool down, so the moon chases the heat away.
FOOTSTEPS= The marks or prints feet leave on the ground when walking (for instance on the beach). Also the sound feet make when somebody is walking.
REVOLVE= Spin, turn around its own axis (like the earth, causing days and nights).
I'VE LET IT GO= I have stopped trying to control myself or the situation; I just let things happen.
CHURCH= A Christian temple.
In this case it is a metaphor of something sacred.
ABOVE= /əbʌv/ Over, higher than.
SHEETS= The thin layers of cloth that you have on top and below you when you are in bed. (se picture)
CANDY (AmE)= Sweet (BrE).
SCENT= /sent/ a distinctive and nice smell; a perfume.
BATHES= To bathe /beɪð/ is to have a bath or to cause somebody or something to have a bath. Also, to cover something with a stuff (you can bathe a cookie in chocolate and the result is a chocolate coat all over the cookie). In this song it is her scent that bathes him (so he is covered by her smell or fragrance)
SKIN= The outer part of your body covering your flesh, that is, the external part of your body you can actually touch.
STAINED= A stain is a spot, mark or discoloration, something that makes you dirty or spoils your clothes. (see picture)
But in this case it is a positive thing, because it is her that stained him, for example by kissing him. And he said “I am stained in you”; that IN expresses the idea that he is inside the stains, that is, the stains from her cover him all over, the same as water covers you all around when you are submerged inside a river, that's why he had just said "it bathes my skin". So this is obviously an exaggeration but makes the metaphor much more intense, 'cause that's the way he feels about it.
ALL I HAVE TO DO IS... + infinitive without to= The only thing I need to do is...
- All you have to do is press this button (that's the only thing you need to do)
- All I have to do is ring the bell and the dog comes
- All I have to do is hold you (and) there's a racing withing my heart = Holding you is enough to set my body on fire.
HOLD= Embrace, put your arms around somebody.
A RACING= An acceleration.
WITHIN= (old fashioned or poetic) In, inside.
BARELY= /beə*lɪ/ Hardly. Almost not.
- I barely know him = I know him just a little bit (almost nothing)
TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW= If you turn the lights down they get less intense. If the lights are low they are not very bright. So in this common expression both things mix into one to emphasize the idea that he wants her to leave the room almost dark.
TAKE IT OFF= Remove (your dress, in this context)
LET ME SHOW MY LOVE FOR YOU= Give me the opportunity to prove how much I love you.
INSATIABLE= /ɪnseɪʃəbəl/ Impossible to satisfy (because you always want more).
TURN ME ON= If you turn somebody on, you excite them in a sexual way, or you arouse their interest.
WANNA= (coll.) Want to.
TASTE= To taste is to eat or drink something to enjoy its good (or bad) flavour, especially if you do it slowly and concentrating on it.
WANNA TASTE EVERY DROP= When you are drinking something that you like very much, for example a very good wine, you want to taste every drop. Metaphorically that means that you love every bit of it and want to enjoy it intensely.
UPON= (old fashioned or poetic) On.
LINGERS= If something lingers (or “lingers on”) it lasts for a long time, or at least longer than usual or expected.
TAKES ME IN= Deceives me, tricks me. Or it may also have a literal sense.
LEVITATE= If you levitate your body floats up in the air and stays there (or at least you have that sensation). Metaphorically, to levitate is to feel extremely happy, so happy that it all feels almost unreal and your body feels weightless, like floating.
SOAR= /sɔ:*/ To fly very high up with very little apparent effort, like eagles soaring up in the sky.
'CAUSE= (coll.) Because.
THE WORLD THEY...= In conversational English is not uncommon to use the subject pronoun together with the noun for emphasis. The noun has a little rising intonation and then the pronoun a bit falling. Let's see some examples:
- My father he doesn't know (subject: my father = he)
- Susan she knows
- Peter and John they're my friends
Look at the example from the lyrics:
- The world they don't understand.
The noun is "the world", singular, but the pronoun is "they", plural. That's because when he says "the world" he's not thinking of this planet (singular) but of everybody, all the people in the world (plural), so he uses the pronoun that expresses the plural idea he has on his mind.
HOLDING HANDS= If you are with another person and you both hold hands, you are both grabbing each other’s hands. (see picture)
If you walk holding hands we say that you are walking “hand in hand”.
This song is quite graphic and very poetical at the same time. He describes all the extreme intensity of his love for her both in physical and spiritual terms, but everything is described in a very romantic, passionate and beautiful way. Pure poetry.
