One of the hits from the movie "Sister Act", Christian songs modernised.
Hail, Girls
Hail, Mary. What's up ?
Well, Jerusalem's become a real drag. Everybody hates me.
Uh-Uh. Not that guy over there.
Who? Him? They all say he's different.
They say he's really weird.
We don't care what people say.
To us, he's always there.
Really?
Nothing you could say
Could tear me away
From my God (my God)
Nothing you could do
'Cause I'm stuck like glue
To my God (my God, my God)
I'm stickin' to my God like a stamp to a letter
Like birds of a feather, we stick together
I'm tellin' you from the start
I can't be torn apart
From my God
Nothing you could do
Could make me untrue
To my God (my God)
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie
To my God (my God, my God)
I gave my God my word of honour
To be faithful, and I'm gonna
You best be believing
I won't be deceiving
My God
As a matter of opinion, I think he's tops
My opinion is, he's the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste, to be exact
He's my ideal, as a matter of fact.
No muscle bound man
Could take my hand
From my God (my God)
No handsome face
Could ever take the place
Of my God (my God, my God)
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to bein' happy, we are
There's not a man today
Who could take me away from my God
(Let's take it home, ladies)
There's not a man today
Who could take me away from my God
(Give them some of that deep shoulder action)
There's not a man today
Who could take me away from my God.
HAIL= An ancient greeting meaning "hello". We still use it in the Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary called "Hail Mary", but the Mary of this song is not the mother of Jesus but just a normal girl called Mary or, very probably, Mary Magdalene, a prostitute who was finally converted by Jesus and became one of his most important disciples.
WHAT'S UP= (coll. AmE) Hello, How are you?
A REAL DRAG= A very unwelcoming situation, a hardship, a difficult situation that you don't like.
UH-UH= (coll.) no.
THAT GUY= (coll.) that man.
WEIRD= /wɪə*d/ strange.
TEAR= /teə*/ Separate by breaking.
STUCK= (Stick-stuck-stuck) fastened. If something breaks, you can stick it back together using glue.
STAMP= A little sticking piece of paper that you stick on a letter (see picture).
FEATHER= /feðə*/ Everyone of the things that cover a bird for protection (see picture).
BIRDS OF A FEATHER= Birds of the same kind, similar birds. In English we have the saying "birds of a feather stick together": it means that people who are similar become friends; people usually tries to be with people who are similar to them.
TORN APART= (tear-tore-torn) Separated violently.
UNTRUE= Unfaithful. My true love is a real lover, one who is faithful and loves you truly, without lies or deceit.
MY WORD OF HONOUR= My promise.
I'M GONNA= (coll.) I'm going to. This TO is a proverb. The same as a pronoun is substituting for a noun, a proverb is substituting for a verb, so in this sentences TO means "to be faithful".
DECEIVE= Trick, make someone believe something false. In a romantic relationship, to deceive someone is to be unfaithful to them by laying to them and having a romance with another person.
HE'S TOPS= (coll.) He's the best.
HE'S THE CREAM OF THE CROP= He's the best. The cream of something is the best part of it. The crop is what you collect in the harvest.
AS A MATTER OF TASTE= In my opinion.
AS A MATTER OF FACT= In fact, actually.
MUSCLE BOUND MAN= A very strong man, with very big muscles, usually as the result of excessive exercise.
WHEN IT COMES TO BEING HAPPY= If we are talking about happiness.
LET'S TAKE IT HOME= If you take something home, you are the winner, so in this context she means: let's do it great so that everybody loves it and we succeed with this song.
This song is a Christian version of the old hit "My Guy", by Mary Wells. They changed this love song for a man into a love song for God. As you can see, they don't need to change much because love is love.
