What words would you dedicate to your mother to thank and acknowledge her unconditional love?
From the album "Forgive Me", the second studio album by Swedish Muslim singer-songwriter, Maher Zain, released on April 2, 2012.
I was a foolish little child
Crazy things I used to do
And all the pain I put you through
Mama now I'm here for you
For all the times I made you cry
The days I told you lies
Now it's time for you to rise
For all the things you sacrificed
Oooh
If I could turn back time, rewind
If I could make it undone I swear that I would
I would make it up to you.
Mum I'm grown up now
It's a brand new day
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I'm grown up now
And it's not too late
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day.
Now I finally understand
That famous line
About the day I'd face in time
Coz now I've got a child of mine
And even though I was so bad
I've learnt so much from you
Now I'm trying to do it too
Love my kids the way you do
Oooh
If I could turn back time, rewind
If I could make it undone I swear that I would
I would make it up to you
Oooh
If I could turn back time, rewind
If I could make it undone I swear that I would
I would make it up to you
Mum I'm grown up now
It's a brand new day
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I'm grown up now
And it's not too late
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
You know you are the number one for me
You know you are the number one for me
You know you are the number one for me
Oh oh, number one for me
You know you are the number one for me
You know you are the number one for me
You know you are the number one for me
Oh oh, number one for me
There is no one in this world
That can take your place
Oooh I'm sorry for ever taken you for granted
I will use every chance I get
To make you smile
Whenever I'm around you
Now I will try to love you
Like you love me
Only God knows how much you mean to me
Oooh
If I could turn back time, rewind
If I could make it undone I swear that I would
I would make it up to you
Mum I'm grown up now
It's a brand new day
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I'm grown up now
And it's not too late
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I'm grown up now
It's a brand new day
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
Mum I'm grown up now
And it's not too late
I'd like to put a smile on your face every day
The number one for me
The number one for me
The number one for me
Oh oh, number one for me
USED TO= We use this to talk about things we often did in the past but not now anymore, so we make a contrast between past and present.
I PUT YOU THROUGH= If you put somebody through something, you make them experience it (used to talk about bad or difficult situations)
TO RISE= (to get up, to elevate) used metaphorically here: to feel good, to be happy.
REWIND= Go back to the past so I can experience/do something again or have the possibility to change it.
(this simile is taken from the old cassette tapes, where you could Rewind RW the tape to go back, Fast-forward FF it to move forwards, Play, Pause it or Stop.
MAKE IT UNDONE= Change the (bad) things I did.
MAKE IT UP TO YOU= (coll.) if you make it up to somebody, you compensate them.
BRAND NEW= An emphatic way to say “new” (completely new)
THAT FAMOUS LINE= A sentence, proverb, etc. repeated very often.
This famous line he talks about is probably something like “when you have your own child you’ll understand”.
COZ= (coll.) Because.
TAKEN YOU FOR GRANTED= If you take something for granted you don’t really appreciate it or value it because you feel simply that it is there and it will always be, so you don’t worry or think about it much.
- We take water for granted, but what would happen if we had no more water left?
- I took her love for granted until one day she left me for another one and all my world collapsed.
CHANCE= Opportunity
I’M AROUND YOU= I’m with you, near you.
HOW MUCH YOU MEAN TO ME= How important you are for me.
Maher Zain was obviously a naughty boy when he was a kid and now that he is older and a father too, he looks back and understands he gave his mother a hard time, but at the same time he can now also understand how much his mother loved him, so he is writing this song to honour his mother, thank her for all her past and present love and promise her that he will do everything he can to make her happy and compensate for the hard times in the past.
