Description

"Cantique de Noel" is the original name of "O Holy Nigh"t, a Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847.

The lyrics are a translation of the 1843 French poem, "Minuit, Chretiens" by Placide Cappeau, translated into English in 1855 by John Sullivan Dwight.

Reginald Fessenden played the song on violin and broadcast it on his live Christmas radio show on December 24, 1906. Since then it has become a popular Christmas carol, loved by many people worldwide.

Transcript

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

The thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born!
O night divine! O night, O night divine!

Meaning

The text of the poem  expresses the true meaning of Christmas and reminds us the primary message of Jesus - loving one another. Reflects on the birth of Jesus and mankind's redemption.

I'd like to share several of my favorite versions of O Holy Night: Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, The Corrs, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion,  and the instrumental version by Apocalyptica, a symphonic metal band from Helsinki composed of classically trained cellists.
