Oliver Twist is one of the first social novels in the history of literature. Striking his readers on various social ills of the era, such as child labour or child to commit crimes. Dickens flouting the hypocrisy of their time dealing with these very serious issues with sarcasm and black humour. The novel could have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose story on the hardness of his life as a child worker in a cotton mill was a widespread in the 1830s.
