Here we're going to see a few more uses of some and any.
We can use SOME in interrogatives when it's not a real question, but a request:
- Have you got any children? (I'm asking)
- Yes, 3.
- Have you got some eggs? I'm making a cake. (= can I have some eggs, please?)
- Yes, of course, how many eggs do you need?
And then, we can also use SOME and ANY in compounds:
somebody/someone (to talk about an indefinite person)
- There is somebody downstairs (but I don't know who he/she is)
Something (to talk about an indefinite thing)
- I'm looking for something nice to decorate this wall
somewhere (to talk about an indefinite place)
- Let's go somewhere tonight, I don't want to stay at home
sometime/some time (to talk about an indefinite moment)
- I want to visit Rome sometime, maybe next summer
