Description

From the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven, "The Tree of Life" is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years - trying to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).  Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.  Written and directed by Terrence Malick, THE TREE OF LIFE stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain.  The film was produced by Bill Pohlad (River Road Entertainment), Sarah Green, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Grant Hill.

Despite not being a box office champion, Terrence Malick's status "d´auteur" is so high that every movie star in Hollywood wants to work with him, even for free! Malick has always worked on his own, spending years on the final cut of his movies and keeping himself far from the mainstream: he has only made five movies in 37 years of career and he never gives interviews or images from himself for promotional purposes. Not for nothing he is frequently refered as "The J.D. Salinger from the movies". Something really unusual in the current Hollywood, so obssesed on numbers, sequels and release dates.

Next month of May, Malick´s new and highly anticipated movie "The Tree of Life" will be screened by the first time at Cannes Film Festival. Until that moment we can enjoy the trailer from the film, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, which hit the web a few months ago. As his previous films, the images from the movie are extremely powerful, elegant and evocative. And a new proof that Malick´s cinema is poetry on images...

Explanations

GRACE= God's love and protection.
Here, "grace" is opposed to "nature" as two different ways of living. The way of nature is just following your instincts, your impulses, it's the famous "just do it" that we hear all the time. The way of grace is focusing on the goals instead of the present whim, it's living life with a purpose, a life which is sacred and so it may need sacrifices in order to make love flow all through it. The way of nature is living life like just any other animal, the way of grace is living life like a mature person, like a human being.

ALLIGATOR= An animal that looks like a crocodile. They live in America (see picture).

IT TAKES= You need...

- It takes courage to do that = You need to be brave to do it.

FIERCE= Violent, savage.

WILL= (noun) Volition (the faculty of choosing or deciding).
- This is my will = This is what I decided to do, what I want to do.
- He always had a strong will = He was determined. When he wanted something, he always tried hard to get it or do it.

ACCOMPLISH= To manage to do, to succeed in doing, to get.

WRESTLE= /resəl/ Fight.

WEEP= Cry, shed tears (when water comes through your eyes because you're very sad).

GUIDE US= Lead us, take us.

UNLESS= (negative conjunction) if not.,
Unless you love, your life will flash by = If you don't love, your life will flash by.

FLASH BY= If something flashes by, it happens really fast, so if your life flashes by, you feel that time passes very quickly and life is very short.
