Love, drugs? Without you I'm broken.
Step by step
Heart to heart
Left, right, left
We all fall down
Like toy soldiers
It wasn't my intention to mislead you
It never should have been this way
What can I say?
It's true, I did extend the invitation
I never knew how long you'd stay
When you hear temptation call
It's your heart that takes, takes the fall
(Won't you come out and play with me?)
Step by step
Heart to heart
Left, right, left
We all fall down
Like toy soldiers
Bit by bit
Torn apart
We never win
But the battle wages on
For Toy soldiers
It's getting hard to wake up in the morning
My head is spinning constantly
How can it be?
How could I be so blind to this addiction?
If I don't stop, the next one's gonna be me
Only emptiness remains
It replaces all, all the pain
(Won't you come out and play with me?)
Step by step
Heart to heart
Left, right, left
We all fall down
Like toy soldiers
Bit by bit
Torn apart
We never win
But the battle wages on
For Toy soldiers.
We never win
Only emptiness remains
It replaces all, all the pain
(Won't you come out and play with me?)
Step by step
Heart to heart
Left, right, left
We all fall down
Like toy soldiers
Bit by bit
Torn apart
We never win
But the battle wages on
For Toy soldiers.
STEP BY STEP= little by little, slowly.
HEART TO HEART= it literally means: "my heart in contact with your heart", usually used to express intimacy, especially when referring to a sincere, frank conversation to deal with a problem.
MISLEAD YOU= confuse you. I mislead you when I do or say something that makes you think that something is true, but it isn’t.
THIS WAY= like this (like= preposition of comparison)
TO EXTEND AN INVITATION= to invite (a formal expression). It can also mean "to prolong an invitation", to make it last longer. I think this is the case here.
TORN APART= broken into pieces.
A BATTLE/WAR WAGES= it continues, it doesn’t stop.
SPIN= turn around an axis, in the same way as the Earth or a coin does. So it is turning but not moving to a different place.
MY HEAD IS SPINNING= I can’t stop thinking about the same idea.
GONNA= going to.
REPLACE= substitute
As it happens in other songs too, this one has two interpretations; one of them may be the correct one, or even both are meant to be correct (so that everyone can choose what they like best)
1- LOVE SONG
The beginning is all about how you can get so infatuated with someone and give them your entire self... even though the other person doesn't have the same intense emotions towards you..
The end is more about heartache.. and taking precautions before she ends up 'empty'... hard to wake up??? (depression)... have you ever been so heartbroken you can't see straight??...
"so blind to this addiction."- this person that you love and are obsessive over..doesn't love you... its not love.. it’s an addiction.. it’s a distorted love.. it’s unhealthy...
Now to the chorus...the best part of the song.. the part that makes it a classic...
It’s a pessimistic view of love... we're all like toy soldiers... toy soldiers don't think... we don't think ... when Cupid strikes he strikes.... and when the relationship ends we all fall down.. we're torn apart...
"but the battle rages on for toy soldiers" .... even though there's so much heart break in our lives.. we always search for our love... or 'toy soldier'..
2- DRUG ABUSE
This person who she was talking about did drugs on purpose the first couple times (It’s true I did extend the invitation) and then couldn't stop (but I never knew how long you would stay) lied to his family and friends (first stanza) and eventually died.
The 'wont you come out and play with me' line refers to the fact that the drugs continually called to him and he couldn't say no.
The chorus is supposed to be about dealing with someone on drugs . . . and how nothing you can do helps, but you never give up. The toy soldiers are the people caught up in drugs, manipulated, without will.
"if I don’t stop, the next one's gonna be me.."..if I don’t stop doing drugs, the next one to die is going to be me.."only emptiness remains, it replaces all the pain" that speaks for itself, when you get hooked on drugs, you finally stop feeling anything, just emptiness, as if nothing makes sense. He died and now she realizes that she must stop it if she doesn’t want to end up in the same way, but it’s probably too late for her now anyway.
But, it is easy to make a point for either drugs or love (and it matters more what each individual thinks than what is actually true), drugs (especially heroine) have much the same effect as ill love, it is so good at the beginning, begins to consume you and then when it goes wrong, it can really go wrong and tear you apart.
