"Cups" (also known as "Cups -Pitch Perfect's When I'm Gone-", or "The Cup Song") is a song from the film Pitch Perfect. The original song "When I'm Gone" was written by A.P. Carter, then recorded in 1931 by the Carter Family.

The cup-hand play got very popular and YouTube soon got filled with people doing it (see these school students practising). If you also want to do it, here is an easy tutorial. With this tutorial and a lot of practise you can also do it right: How to play "Cups".

I got my ticket for the long way round
Two bottle whiskey for the way
And I sure would like some sweet company
And I'm leaving tomorrow, what do you say?

When I'm gone
When I'm gone
You're going to miss me when I'm gone
You're going to miss me by my hair
You're going to miss me everywhere
Oh, You're going to miss me when I'm gone

When I'm gone
When I'm gone
You're going to miss me when I'm gone
You're going to miss me by my walk
You're going to miss me by my talk
Oh, You're going to miss me when I'm gone

I've got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest of views
It's got mountains, it's got rivers
It's got sights that give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you

Explanations

TWO BOTTLE WHISKEY= (slang) two bottles of whiskey (here, "two-bottle" is working as an adjective, so it has no plural)

FOR THE WAY= For the journey.

I SURE WOULD LIKE= (coll.) I would certainly like, I would very much like.

WHAT DO YOU SAY?= What do you think about it?, what's your opinion? (the implied meaning in this context is: do you want to come with me?)

YOU'RE GOING TO= A common pronunciation of this (the most common pronunciation in the USA) is "You're gonna".

MISS ME= If you miss somebody, they are away and you feel sorry because you want them to be with you.

BY MY HAIR= You're gonna miss me by my hair = You will miss my hair (you will miss me and think of my hair)

MY WALK= The way I walk.

MY TALK= The way I talk.

SIGHTS= /saɪts/ views.

GIVE YOU SHIVERS= If something gives you shivers, you feel a strong emotion: shock, fear, happiness, etc.

Meaning

The lyrics are very simple and straightforward. A girl feels trapped in her life and decides to leave for another place.

I got my ticket for the long way round

But there is some guy that she likes, and she wants him to go away with her.

And I sure would like some sweet company

So she invites him to go with her.

And I'm leaving tomorrow, what do you say?

But she knows the guy is very undecided and he will probably stay, so all the song is about telling this guy how sorry he will feel when she is gone.

   When I'm gone
   When I'm gone
You're going to miss me when I'm gone
You're going to miss me by my hair
You're going to miss me everywhere
Oh, You're going to miss me when I'm gone

And just in case her company is not enough, she also tells him about how wonderful that new place is.

I've got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest of views
It's got mountains, it's got rivers
It's got sights that give you shivers

Because she really wants to go away, and she is determined, but she thinks it would be much better to go away with him.

But it sure would be prettier with you
