Note: ACROSS FROM is the American equivalent to OPPOSITE

- The bank is across from the library = The bank is opposite the library

more differences:

AmE: ON the street, BrE: IN the street
AmE: Main Street, BrE: High Street
AmE: Movie theatre, BrE: Cinema
AmE: Neighborhood, BrE: Neighbourhood

Used in both varieties but more common in one:

AmE: Sure, BrE: Of course
AmE: You're welcome / No problem BrE: Not at all

- Where's the restaurant?
- It's next to the bank.

- Where's the supermarket?
- It's across from the movie theatre.

- Where's the school?
- It's between the library and the park.

- Where's the post-office?
- It's around the corner from the hospital.

- Excuse me, is there a laudrymat in this neighbourhood?
- Yes, there's a laundrymat on Main Street, next to the supermarket.
- Thanks very much.
- You're welcome.

- Excuse me, can I ask you a question?
- Sure
- I'm new here. Is there a post-office nearby?
- Yes, there is. There's a post-office on Jefferson Street, across from the police station.
- I see. And where's the police station?
- It's between the school and the movie theatre.
- Oh, is there a movie theatre in this neighbourhood?
- Yes, there's a wonderful movie theatre here.
- And where is it?
- It's next to the police station.
- And the police station is across from the post-office, right?
- Yes, that's right.
- And it's on Jefferson Street.
- U-Huh.
- Where's Jefferson Street?
- You ARE new here.
- Yes, I am.
- Jefferson Street is around the corner from this building.
- Oh!
- Tell you what, I'm on my way to the library. Just come with me.
- Oh, thank you.
- No problem.
- So, there's a library in this neighbourhood?
- Yeah, there's a fantastic library in the neighbourhood.
- Where is it?
- It's across from the new bakery.
- Oh, is there a bakery nearby?
