If All the World Were Paper (AppuSeries) | (India) |
A little traditional poem for children with a karaoke version at the end.
This poem was the inspiration for the song "If All The World Were Paper", by Shirley Temple, from the musical film "Little Miss Broadway" (see here).
If all the world were paper,
And all the sea were ink,
And all the trees were bread and cheese,
What should we have to drink?
WERE= "it was" is a past, but "it were" is a subjunctive (an unreal past) used in conditional sentences, although in modern English more and more people are saying "it was" in conditional sentences too.
SHOULD= In older English (not many years ago) SHOULD was used with the first person singular and plural (I, we) and WOULD with the rest. In modern English we use WOULD for all persons, so we would say: "What would we have to drink?"
