The part of the day that starts at midnight and goes all the way around to noon, is called "a.m.".

The part of the day from noon, midday, the middle of the day, is called "p.m.", all the way to midnight.
3 p.m. is "three in the afternoon". You usually never say "a.m." or "p.m.", but you write "a.m." or "p.m." or you read it in the newspaper or in a book.
