This is outside the box, or out.
There's an apple in the box.

If I say, "Tom, we are out of apples, we're out of apples, can you go to the store?, we're out of apples". That means there are no more apples, the apples are gone. There are no more apples left.

If I say, "Tom, can you go to the store?, we're almost out of apples". That means there's maybe one apple left. Just one apple.
"We're almost out... Tom, we're almost out of sugar". That means there's just a little bit of sugar left.
