Closer, closer, closer, closer

Turn the lights off in this place
And she shines just like a star

And I swear I know her face
I just don’t know who you are
Turn the music up in here
I still hear her loud and clear
Like she’s right there in my ear
Telling me that she wants to own me
To control me
Come closer
Come closer

And I just can’t pull myself away
Under her spell I can't break
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

And I just can’t bring myself no way
But I don’t want to escape
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

I can feel her on my skin
I can taste her on my tongue
She’s the sweetest taste of sin
The more I get the more I want
She wants to own me
Come closer
She says "come closer"

And I just can’t pull myself away
Under her spell I can't break
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

And I just can’t bring myself no way
But I don’t want to escape
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

(Come closer) x 7

I just can’t stop, no
I just can’t stop, no
I just can’t stop, no
I just can’t stop, no

And I just can’t pull myself away
Under her spell I can't break
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

And I just can’t bring myself no way
But I don’t want to escape
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

And I just can’t pull myself away
Under her spell I can't break
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop
I just can’t stop

come closer

CLOSER= Nearer (close to = near).
- She's close to me = She's near me.

TURN THE LIGHTS OFF IN THIS PLACE AND SHE SHINES JUST LIKE A STAR= If you turn the lights off, she will shine like a star.
In colloquial English we can use two sentences with AND instead of a conditional sentence (type 1) with IF. The first sentence uses an imperative and the second sentence a present or a future:
- Come here and I’ll tell you = If you come here, I will tell you.
- Open this door and you’re in trouble = If you open this door you’ll be in trouble.
- Tell anyone and you’re dead = If you tell this to anybody, I’ll kill you.
- Say yes and we gonna be happy forever = If you say yes, we’ll be happy forever.

I SWEAR= I say it, and you can be sure that I’m telling the true. (it’s stronger than saying “I promise”).

I JUST DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE= This is not a question, so we don’t use an inversion:
- Who are you? (question: inversion)
- I don’t know who you are (estatement: no inversion)

TURN THE MUSIC UP= Play the music louder, with more volume.

LOUD AND CLEAR= Clearly. We often use this expression “loud and clear” to mean that we can hear what somebody says perfectly well:
- Can you hear what I’m saying?
- Yes, sir. Loud and clear.

LIKE SHE’S RIGHT THERE (coll.)= As if she were right there. This LIKE is a comparative preposition.

OWN= Possess.

I CAN’T PULL MYSELF AWAY= I can’t go away (from her). We say PULL and not GO because he feels chained to her, tied to her, so to break that strong connection he should pull himself strongly away.

SPELL= A magical incantation, a charm. For example, a witch or a wizard can cast a spell on you and change you into a frog.

UNDER HER SPELL= If you are under somebody’s spell you are under her control because they cast a spell on you so they possess your mind and can tell you what to do. You are hypnotized, like a robot following orders. If you break the spell you are free again and they have no more power over you.

UNDER HER SPELL I CAN’T BREAK= This sentence is not grammatically correct but it means: I’m under her spell and I can’t break her spell.

I CAN’T BRING MYSELF= I can’t force myself. If you bring yourself to do something, you force yourself to do it, you try very hard to do it.
- I knew I had to talk to her, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

NO WAY= (coll.) A very emphatic way of saying NO (= Absolutely no. Not at all. Never).
- Do you like this shirt? - No way, man! It's horrible.
- Are you coming to the party? - No way!

ESCAPE= Run away.

THE MORE I GET THE MORE I WANT= When I get more from her, I want more from her, so it’s an endless growing process. The construction is: THE MORE … THE MORE… If the first part increases, the second part increases too.
- The more I look at it, the more I like it = I’m looking at it and every minute I like it more.
- The more you exercise, the happier you get = If you do exercise you will get happier every day.
- The more you eat, the more you grow = If you eat you’ll grow up. If you eat a lot, you’ll grow up faster.

The meaning of the song is summed up in the line "Under her spell I can't break". He's so in love that she has no free will anymore, she is in control, he is under her magic spell. She says "come closer" and he can't disobey because he is hypnotised by the power of her love. But he doesn't mind.

Ne-Yo explained the inspiration behind this track to The Boston Globe September 18, 2008: "I knew I wanted to do something that was very much U.K.-inspired, very much along the lines of house, trance, techno, but I knew I couldn't do a straight-up house record or a straight-up techno record. I had to do something that had elements of it but still had elements of R&B, which is my base, and that's exactly what that track was. (Stargate) played the track, and it was exactly where I wanted to go, anyway. I think that's why we work. We're getting to the point where we finish each other's sentences musically."
