The amazing official music video for "In The End" from the album "Hybrid Theory." Directed By: Nathan Cox and Joe Hahn. Topped #1 in 2001.

(It starts with one)
One thing I don't know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
(All I know)
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
(It’s so unreal)
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on but didn’t even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go

I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to be will eventually be a memory of a time when...

I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter

One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
Despite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end

You kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when...

I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know

I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter

IT DOESN’T EVEN MATTER= It’s not important at all.

KEEP THAT IN MIND= Remember that.

RHYME= Poem.

IN DUE TIME= Some time in the future, when the moment is right.

FLY BY= Move away past us flying.

PENDULUM= A reference to the pendulum of grandpa clocks (see picture), that is, a reference to the passing of time. Every time the pendulum swings (moves from side to side), time is passing on.

THE CLOCK TICKS LIFE AWAY= When a clock is working (not digital clocks but the old analogical clocks), it ticks (makes a ticking sound). If the clock ticks life away, it means that it is marking the passage of time, so second after second your life is running a little bit away (you have one second less left to live).

HOLD ON= Wait.

IT ALL FELL APART= Everything was destroyed, ruined.

EVENTUALLY= At the end; in due time (see above)

DESPITE OF + noun= Although + subject + verb
- Despite the rain, we went out for a walk = Although it was raining, we went...
- Despite her character, she’s a nice person = Although she has a terrible character, she’s...

MOCKING= If you mock somebody you make fun of them, you make them feel stupid.

FOUGHT= past simple of TO FIGHT (fight – fought – fought)

BACK THEN= We use this phrase to refer to a time in the past.
- When I bought this car I was very happy. Back then I didn’t know it would be so expensive to maintain.
- In the Middle Ages many people went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and back then there were no cars, so most of them went all the way walking.

I’VE PUT MY TRUST IN YOU= I trust you, I think you will not let me down.

PUSHED= If you push things, you make an effort and go to the limit.

I will transcribe here a common (and clever) interpretation for this song, about death and failed relationships:

I actually think that this song has multiple meanings. Some say that it is about a failed relationship, while others suggest a last-call suicide note. Both suggestions fit well with the lyrics, with evidence on each side. In Verse (II), [he] sings "Despite the way you were mocking me / Acting like I was part of your property / Remembering all the times you fought with me / I'm surprised it got so far / . . . . You wouldn't even recognize me anymore / Not that you knew me back then/. In my eyes and ears, it seems like [he] is explaining possible issues with a relationship. But also throughout the song, his choruses, can be seen as a last resort way of ending everything-- suicide. If someone talks about "trying so hard" or "in the end it doesn't even matter" then it seems like someone is giving up hope because, literally, in the end, it won't matter because I will be dead.

And now I will reveal the true meaning behind this lyrics, which is not quite the same.

The lyrics are based on the struggles lead singer Chester Bennington went through growing up. He was often picked on.

So it's not about a failed love, it's actually about school harassment.

But anyway, the idea of suicide is so convincing that...

In March 2001, 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams shot and killed 2 of his classmates at his high school in Santee, California. He left a note for his father with the lyrics to this as an attempt to explain his feelings. The key lines were "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't really matter."

But then again, as the first interpretation said, this song probably has two levels of meaning. The author is using his memories and emotions from the times of his own school harassment to talk about a more general feeling that can also be experienced through a failed love relationship.
