Official music video for Katy Perry's "Roar" brought to you in Junglescope.

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Now I'm floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (hey!)
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
(you'll hear me roar)
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Roar, oh, roar, oh, roar!

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion
And you're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
(you'll hear me roar)
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar!

I USED TO= We use this phrase to talk about actions that were frequent in the past but not now anymore.

BITE MY TONGUE= If you bite your tongue, you really want to say something but you don’t say anything because you think that if you say it you will have problems.

HOLD MY BREATH= Stop breathing. Figuratively “hold my breath” means that you are feeling a strong emotion and want to do something but you don’t do anything because you think it is better not to.

SCARED= Afraid.

ROCK THE BOAT= To rock the boat is when you move inside a small boat and the boat starts moving from side to side (rocking), so it may flip and throw you overboard into the water. So we use this expression figuratively meaning “to do something that causes trouble”.

MAKE A MESS= Cause problems.

GUESS= (coll.) Suppose.

I HAD A CHOICE= I had options, I could decide between different things.

THE BREAKING POINT= The mental state where you can’t resist the pressure anymore and collapse emotionally (or become submissive).

I STOOD FOR NOTHING= If you stand for something, you fight for it and/or you don’t let anybody take that from you.

I FELL FOR EVERYTHING= If you fall for something, they make you believe it is true (but it is not).

YOU HELD ME DOWN= You controlled me.

BRUSHING OFF THE DUST= In the far west (in western movies), when two men fought, or one man was shot, they fell down on the ground. If they stay lying there, they are dead or defeated. But if they get up (and brush off the dust from his clothes) that means that he is still alive and ready to keep fighting.

GONNA= (coll.) (I’m) going to.

I GOT THE EYE OF THE TIGER= An empowering mantra made famous in the movie Rocky 3 (see under the meaning tab for more information). I GOT= I've got, I have.

ROAR= When a lion or a tiger roars, it makes a very loud and strong sound to scare its prey before attacking, or to scare them away.

I EARNED MY STRIPES= The stripes are the dark lines that cover the body of a tiger. Here she is using the lines of the tiger as a metaphor for bravery, strength and courage (the qualities of a tiger). If you have something maybe you were born with it or they gave it to you for free, but if you “earn” something, you deserve it because of what you did. So if she earned her stripes, she is strong, brave and courageous because she worked hard for it, she deserves it, she fought for it.

The song is a bouncy statement by Perry of moving forward into the next stage of her life after the tumultuous end of her marriage to Russell Brand. Talking to BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, she revealed: "It's a bit of a self-empowering type of song. I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment. Obviously I've been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that's what this is about."

When Perry sings about having the "eye of the tiger," it's a mantra of courage and determination that Stallone's character, Rocky Balboa, used in the 1982 movie Rocky III to defeat Mr. T's character Clubber Lang. Stallone saw the youth appeal in the phrase, and asked the band Survivor to write a song around the title. The first two Rocky movies were aimed at adults, but this third one, with a fresh, contemporary theme song, gained a whole new audience primed by MTV. You can see the video of that song here: Eye of the Tiger.
