A song about the pains of love and healing.

Sing to the karaoke version here.

It's been the longest winter without you
I didn't know where to turn to
See, somehow I can't forget you
After all that we've been through

Going, coming
Thought I heard a knock

Who's there? no one
Thinking that I deserve it
Now I realize that I really didn't know
If you didn't notice you mean everything
Quickly I'm learning to love again
All that I know is I'ma be ok

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too. Oh yea
It'll all get better in time
Even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile 'cause I deserve to
It'll all get better in time

I couldn't turn on the TV
Without something there to remind me
Was it all that easy
To just put aside your feelings?

If I'm dreaming don't wanna laugh
Hurt my feelings but that's the path I believe in
And I know time will heal it
If you didn't notice, boy you meant everything
Quickly I'm learning to love again
All I know is I'ma be ok

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too. Oh yea
It'll all get better in time
Even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile 'cause I deserve to
It'll all get better in time

Since there's no more you and me
It's time I let you go
So I can be free
And live my life how it should be
No matter how hard it is I'll be fine without you
Yes I will

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too
It'll all get better in time
Even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile ‘cause I deserve to (yes I do)
It'll all get better in time

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too
It'll all get better in time
And even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile ‘cause I deserve to…

I DIDN’T KNOW WHERE TO TURN TO= If you need help you turn to something or somebody for help.

SOMEHOW= In some unspecified way.

AFTER ALL WE’VE BEEN THROUGH= After all the things we’ve lived together (especially difficult things and problems)

GOING, COMING, THOUGHT I HEARD...= She’s expressing her present state of anxiety.

DESERVE= If you deserve something you should have it because you’re good enough for it or because it is fair that you have it.

REALIZE= (see NOTICE)

NOTICE= If you notice something you perceive it through your senses. Compare to REALIZE: if you realize something, you perceive it through a mental process.
- I notice there was someone outside the window (because I heard a noise or saw something)
- I realized somebody had been in my room (because I had left a book on the bed and now it was in a different place, so somebody must have come in and moved it).

I’MA BE OK= I’m going to be ok. The colloquial form I’MA to express the future (a contraction of “I’m going to / I’m gonna”. It is getting common in conversational speech, specially in the USA.

THOUGHT I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU= The subject I is missing because it is clearly understood.

GONNA= Going to.

IT’S GONNA HURT WHEN IT HEALS TOO= Now I’m hurting because I love you and we’re not together anymore. Time will heal it, but the process of healing will hurt too because now I don’t want to forget you.

'CAUSE= Because. Also spelled: cause, cos, coz, cuz. Very common in conversational English.

I DESERVE TO= I deserve to smile. The particle TO is a “proverb”. In the same way as a pronoun is substituting for a noun, a “proverb” is substituting for a verb:
- Do you like apples? Here, take one (ONE = an apple)
- Come with me.   – No, I don’t want to  (TO = to go with you)

IT’LL= Pronounced /ɪtəl/

IT’LL ALL GET BETTER IN TIME= When time passes, things will be better (I will forget you and be happy again).

PUT ASIDE YOUR FEELINGS= If you put something aside you put it out of the way so if you put aside your feelings you forget about those feelings, you don’t have feelings. For example, if you are a teacher and are correcting your students’ exams, you have to put aside your feelings to be fair.

WANNA= Want to

LAUGH= /lɑ:f/ in standard BrE, but /læf/ in non-standard BrE and in AmE (and in this song).

THE PATH= The way.

THAT’S THE PATH I BELIEVE IN= That’s the way I believe things should be.

HEAL= Cure. Restore to health.

IF YOU DIDN’T NOTICE, BOY YOU MEANT EVERYTHING= If you didn’t know, now I’m telling you that you were everything to me, the most important thing in my life.

SINCE THERE’S NO MORE YOU AND ME= Because we are not together anymore.

IT’S TIME I LET YOU GO= The expression IT’S TIME is followed by a past tense, but this verb is irregular (let-let-let) so all three forms are the same. If it’s time something happened (or “it’s high time”), that thing should have happened before, it’s taking too long.

I LET YOU GO= If you love somebody but now you are not together (you broke up) you are suffering. If you let go, or if you let them go, you stop suffering because you stop thinking about them and start a new life.

NO MATTER HOW HARD IT IS= It is very difficult, but I’ll do it anyway.

I’LL BE FINE WITHOUT YOU. YES, I WILL= In normal English we don’t usually use WILL to talk about the future (we prefer “be going to”, present continuous, etc.). But these two WILL’s are not simply future, they have a special meaning: The first WILL here is a prediction based on subjective feelings. The second WILL is a decision make at this very moment. For these two cases (and some others, like invitations and volition, we use WILL).

The meaning of this song is quite straightforward: time heals everything. No matter how terrible you may feel at this moment, everything will get better in time. But when your heart is badly broken time goes on too slowly, so a little push on our side can really help, and that’s what she’s talking about: "don’t wanna laugh... but that’s the path I believe in".
