Jacqueline Marie "Jackie" Evancho (pronounced /iːvæŋkoʊ/) is a soprano who gained popularity after a performance for America's Got Talent (Aug 2010) when she was only 10 years old. On this video we can see the moment when she passes into the final while both the audience and the jury go crazy about her.

America's Got Talent is a British-owned American reality television series on the NBC television network. It is a talent show that features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and other performers of all ages competing for the advertised top prize of US$1 million. The first two members of the jury on this video are British (so notice their accent).

There's a listening activity (advanced level, but try anyway) to check understanding. Go the the ACTIVITY tab.

Here we have 5 comprehension questions to check if you could understand some of the video (see the answers on the KEY tab):

1- Jackie made up a new word to describe how she felt when they called her name.
2- How often does she practise
3- Why is Jackie's dad not here to see her?
4- Why is the first member of the jury so happy?
5- What does the second member of the jury says about the lyrics of the song?

The motet that she sings on this performance is the "Pie Jesu" (Webber's version), often included in musical settings of the Requiem Mass, a mass celebrated in the Catholic Church for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. So this song is telling God to let them (the dead) rest in peace forever (in heaven, of course). These are the lyrics, in Latin, and their English translation:

Pie Iesu, Pie Jesu
Pie Iesu, Pie Jesu
Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem
Dona eis requiem

Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei
Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem
Dona eis requiem
Sempiternam,
sempiternam requiem

TRANSLATION:

Merciful Jesus,
Merciful Jesus,
You who take away the sins of the world
Grant them rest
Grant them rest

Lamb of God, Lamb of God
Lamb of God, Lamb of God
You who take away the sins of the world
Grant them rest
Grant them rest
Everlasting
Forever grant them rest

1- Fantabulous
2- Once a day, one hour.
3- He had to stay at home watching her brothers and sister
4- Because in the future he will be known as the guy who discovered Jackie Evencho
5- That she didn't understand anything, obviously
