A song about love or money. One of my favourites.

You can sing to the karaoke version here.

One, two, princes kneel before you
(that’s what I said, now)
Princes, princes who adore you
(just go ahead, now)
One has diamonds in his pockets
(that sounds great, now)
This one, said he wants to buy you rockets
(ain’t in his head, now)

This one, he got a princely racket
(that’s what I said, now)
Got some big seal upon his jacket
(ain’t in his head, now)
You marry him, your father will condone you
(how bout that, now)
You marry me, your father will disown you
(he’ll eat his hat, now)

Marry him or marry me,
I’m the one that loves you b-baby cant you see?
I ain’t got no future or a family tree,
But I know what a prince and lover ought to be,
I know what a prince and lover ought to be....

Said, if you want to call me baby
(just go ahead, now)
And if you’d like to tell me maybe
(just go ahead, now)
And if you wanna buy me flowers
(just go ahead, now)
And if you’d like to talk for hours
(just go ahead, now)

...

ADORE= Love very very much.

ROCKETS= Well, a rocket is that big flying machine that we use to go to the moon (not me, of course), but the one who has diamonds is the rich man, so the poor man can’t buy you rockets to go to the moon! It took me months of deep investigation but I finally solved this enigma: Rockets are a Danish brand of filter tipped cigarettes made by House of Prince (very appropriate here). So there, the rich man has diamonds (no one said he’ll give them to you, though) and the poor man wants to buy you a packet of cigarettes! Tempting, eh? (uhm... difficult choice, yea, but listen a bit more).

AIN’T IN HIS HEAD= It isn’t in his head = he’s not really thinking about it. So he’s lying, he won’t buy you any cigarettes, it’s only because he wants to seduce you. So, little ladies, next time a boy offers to buy you some cigarettes say NO, he only wants to take you to bed. And in a non-smoking area. Remember, he won’t buy you tobacco, so say  no!

PRINCELY= Royal, related to a prince. So what is “a princely racket”?, a tennis racket fit for a prince? (!?)

GOT SOME BIG SEAL UPON HIS JACKET= He had a very big seal on his jacket. Cool leather jackets sometimes have a big seal (a badge) to make them look more trendy, like you are a motorcyclist or some kind of oh-yea-i’m-so-cool guy (I have one myself).

So the poor one has a very nice racket and a cool jacket. But he won’t buy you cigarettes! remember that.

CONDONE= Forgive an offence.

HOW BOUT THAT= How about that? = What do you think about it? = Do you like that?

DISOWN= Disinherit. To say: you’re not my daughter anymore! Go away with that oh-my-god-i'm-so-cool boyfriend of yours and never come back here again! And in case you didn’t know it, he won’t buy you any cigarettes!

HE’LL EAT HIS HAT= When a father gets very, very angry because his daughter is going out with an oh-i'm-so-cool motorcyclist, he usually eats his hat. Apparently, that helps him relax and forget about them both.

I AIN’T GOT= I haven’t got.

FAMILY TREE= Your ancestors (often drawn as a tree with many branches, you being the trunk). So if he has no future and no family tree, that means that he will be a nobody the same as all his family before him. (in my humble opinion, just a bunch of excuses to justify that he doesn’t want to buy her tobacco).

OUGHT TO= Should

BUT I KNOW WHAT A PRINCE AND LOVER OUGHT TO BE= A-ha! For the first time we’ve got some nice information about the poor motorcyclist (yea, he said before “I’m the one that loves you”, but he also said he’d buy her cigarettes). He has nothing, he is nothing, he’s not a prince, but he knows how to be “her prince” and love her as she deserves. We presume that the other one, the rich, “the real prince” doesn’t. So maybe we were mistaken about the boy. Let’s listen some more.

Now he is going to reveal his main asset, his biggest advantage over the rich suitor: if you marry him you’ll be miserable, but if you marry me you’ll be happy because I will accept you as you are and you can do anything you want: So if you want to call me baby or tell me “maybe” or buy me flowers or talk for hours... Just go ahead!

JUST GO AHEAD= Come on, do it, it’s ok.

Ok, and now the moment of truth: will you marry the stupid, rich moron or will you marry me, that I’m so cool and a great lover and will treat you like a princess?

Don’t tell me yet, I ran out of cigarettes. Be right back!
